Student Computers
There are many aspects to consider when purchasing a computer for a student.  Price is an obvious consideration.  But, is it the most important?

Other important factors to consider are

  1. What will the student be studying?
  2. Is the student willing and able to take the computer to class with them?
  3. How long should the computer be useable?
If the student will be studying in a program that has a particular need, look for a link to that program in the list to the right.  Otherwise, (or, if no link is found), choose the "other" category.

An important consideration is whether to purchase a desktop (desktop is a generic term meaning any system intending to stay at a desk permanently, including "towers" that stand vertically and the "desktop" that sits horizontaly) or laptop (also known as a "notebook" computer).  I would highly recommend that you consider a laptop with wireless networking.  Most campuses either currently have, or will have within the next few years wireless networks available to their students.  Also, many coffee shops and cafes offer free wireless access that can help students who prefer to study away from their home.  The value of working on the same system during class and while doing homework can be invaluable - no swapping files from one location to another, etc.  Though, that can be a disadvantage in that transferring files via CD/DVDs or external drives forces you to back up your work.

Desktops still have a price advantage over laptops, so this could be a big consideration in what you purchase.  Also, the highest end components can usually only be found on desktops.

And, how long do you want the computer to last?  Should this be useable for a graduate?  This may not be possible for someone graduating from a four year program with large computer needs.  But, if the primary use is word processing and internet use, a nice system with a good warranty could easily be useable a few years down the road.  Look to see what sorts of service plans are offered by various companies.  Some even offer protection against accidental damage to laptops.

If you buy the lowest end computer with the lowest warranty available, don't expect the system to last past the warranty date, if even that long.
